10 Simple Tips for Effective Infographics

Have you ever seen one of these really creative visually appealing graphics that suck your attention into the intricacies of their statistical information? Have you ever been amazed at how colorful and visually soothing these graphics can be on your eyes? Have you ever been intrigued at the facts that you learn from simple graphics and icons that these information graphics utilize?

These graphics are called infographics. It’s nearly impossible for you to not have seen one in your life. Especially that I conveniently included one at the top of this post! An infographic is a visual representation of complex information, data and knowledge in a quick, simple and visually stimulating graphical presentation. The infographic above gives some impressive statistics, facts and information on infographics that I hope gives you a scope of how effective they are in sharing information.

My main goal is to give you a few pointers on how to effectively design an infographic. Don’t worry, if you are not the best at designing graphics, you will be able to better appreciate its effectiveness, development and creativity. I will also pass on a few resources on the Internet where you can create your own infographics, which I think is pretty cool.

Infographics usually come in five different flavors. Yes, I describe them as flavors – like chocolate or ice cream. These infographics are highly creative so to tantalize some more of your senses, I am taking you on a quick and simple journey of their possible variations put forth by Daniel Adams:

  • Cause and Effect – These infographics visually describe the cause and effect relationship between two concepts.
  • Chronological – These infographics detail the length of a process or event over a set period of time and pinpoint their various stages or milestones.
  • Quantitative – These infographics utilize simple data-related graphics to visually represent statistical data.
  • Directional – These infographics provide a sense of direction using utilizing visually appealing graphics or icons.
  • Product – These infographics educate us on various aspects of a product, giving us insight on its parts and how it functions.

To effectively design an infographic and truly appreciate its creativity and purpose, I’ve composed a list of 10 simple tips that I feel will be very beneficial to you with some inspiration from Marvi Ocampo, Paul Gustafson and Daniel Adams:

  • Focus – The first step you must take is to focus on a specific simple topic and develop a question that you would answer through your infographic’s content.
  • Simplicity – Keep the content that you use simple and concise in order to give it a natural flow that would appeal to the eye.
  • Accuracy – Ensure that the content that you decide to share is accurate and verify that you are providing a reputable piece of information to help others who are seeking insight on the topic that you have chosen to create your infographic on.
  • Clarity – Be clear in your message and do not include too much information. Only incorporate the most important content that answers your main question.
  • Story telling – Try to formulate a story and engage the reader as they follow through your infographic. The content should connect and easily flow.
  • Creativity – Be creative and use a variety of graphics, graphs, icons, etc to portray interesting content a visually stimulating manner.
  • Design and Color Scheme – Ensure the layout of your infographic is visually appealing and carefully choose a color scheme that is inviting to your eye and accompanies the content as best as possible.
  • Complement – When including your infographic in an article, blog post or other type of literature, ensure that the infographic complements the layout of the content.
  • File Size – When creating and saving your infographic, ensure that it is a small file size so that it will be much easier to share through your social networks.
  • Sharing – Once you finalize your infographic, share it with the world through your social media outlets and your social network.

If you are feeling a creative bug at this point and have some data that you would like to create an infographic for or even put together an infographic resume. You can check out any of these five websites, which specialize in helping you create your very own infographic and share it with the world.
